Why Tunisia from Iran, practically

Based on our clients' actual entries, Iranian passport holders can enter Tunisia without a prior tourist visa — but sources conflict, and we recommend verifying with the Tunisian Embassy in Tehran before booking (see the visa banner at the top of the page). Flights typically route via Istanbul or Doha, 7 to 9 hours total. Arabic is the service language; hotels are.

The Sahara — a Mediterranean desert distinct from Iran's Kavir

Tunisia's Sahara isn't an extension of the eastern desert — a different composition: Mediterranean dunes, ancient ksour, palm-grove oases. Ideal climate November to March — mild days, cool nights under the stars:

• Tozeur — capital of the northern Sahara, historic palm-grove, ancient ksour (Ksour Ouled Debbab and others), Star Wars filming locations.
• Douz — gateway to the greater Sahara, weekly camel market.
• Matmata — millennia-old Berber troglodyte houses carved underground.
• Chebika and Tamerza — waterfalls and rocky canyons in the Atlas, evocative of certain Persian oases.
• Ain Jamal — a quiet small oasis on the desert edge.

Programmes combine 4×4 dune safari, camel ride at sunset, and night in an authentic Berber camp or an oasis hotel deep in the desert.

Kairouan and the Maghrebi Islamic axis

Kairouan (UNESCO) is Islam's fourth-holiest city after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem, and the first Islamic city in the Maghreb — founded by Uqba ibn Nafi in 670:

• The Great Mosque of Uqba ibn Nafi — the first mosque built in the Islamic Maghreb, marble courtyard, columns reused from earlier Roman and Byzantine buildings.
• The Aghlabid basins — 9th-century hydraulic works.
• Mausoleum of Abu Zam'a al-Balawi, Companion of the Prophet — a place of reverence.
• Ancient zawiyas and madrasas — centres of learning for centuries.

Kairouan pairs in one or two days with the other UNESCO sites: El Jem (Africa's largest Roman amphitheatre) and Dougga (the best-preserved Roman site in North Africa).

Tunis, the capital — the country's Mediterranean core

A capital that blends Arab-Islamic character with Mediterranean modernity in short distances:

• The medina (UNESCO) — 7th-century alleys, the Zitouna mosque, perfumers' and coppersmiths' souks.
• Carthage — Antonine baths, Punic port, national museum.
• Sidi Bou Said — white-walled, blue-doored village.
• The Lake, La Marsa, Gammarth — 4★ and 5★ hotels and the waterfront.
• Habib Bourguiba Avenue — municipal theatre and downtown cafés.

Hammamet, Sousse and the eastern coast

The coastline, heart of family leisure:

• Hammamet — 5★ all-inclusive beachfront resorts.
• Sousse — medina and ribat (UNESCO), modern marina.
